When can I sign up, and is an installation subsidy still available?

Now and yes! Sign up now to take advantage of the currently-offered subsidy. Subscribers signing after the discontinuation of the current subsidy will not be eligible to receive up to a $750 credit being offered to cover or offset the cost of installing each home's fiber connection (“drop”) to the network. To learn all about the subsidy, go here.

Installation logistics vary among our subscribers, and so drop costs can as well. To get a feel for what your connection (drop) costs might be, have a look at the new-connection policy, posted on our Policies page.

If you think you may want high-speed Internet at any point in the future, you should give serious consideration to signing up while the subsidy is active as it can save you hundreds of dollars down the road.

What will I be agreeing to?

You will agree to allow the town to install, operate, maintain, and provide service to you via the town-owned fiber network and associated equipment under certain terms and at agreed-upon rates. The town is not currently requiring any minimum term of service (subscription duration).

You will agree to give the town and our contractors access to your house and yard to install and maintain the network connection. You will agree that the fiber, cabling, and all the equipment and hardware between and including the fiber connection cable to the house and the Optical Network Terminal, router, and/or Telo adapter provided at installation will remain the property of the town and/or its subcontractors.

You will also agree to pay any outstanding installation fees, all activation fees, and all ongoing monthly fees.

You will be able to rescind this agreement any time prior to installation.

The full text of the agreement will be available to review from the application page during sign-up.

If I signed up with WiredWest and paid a $49 deposit a few years back, do I have to sign up again?

Yes, you will need to officially sign up for Becket Broadband's service through the sign-up link. And you may still be able to get your WiredWest deposit back. See the next Q&A for details.

Can I still get my WiredWest deposit back?

If you made a deposit several years ago (2015-ish) to show your interest in a broadband future and didn't receive the amount as a credit on your first WiredWest bill or otherwise have it refunded, you can apply to Mass.gov's Unclaimed Property Division for a refund:

How do I sign up?

Complete an application online at whipcityfiber.com/becket or call 1-833-991-9378, and a customer service representative can help you with the online application or even complete your application over the phone. Note that neither making a deposit with WiredWest in 2015 nor taking the 2019/2020 Broadband Survey constituted a sign-up for service.

Signing up takes about 10 minutes. You’ll be asked for your contact information, which services you’d like to subscribe to, and other questions. You’ll also be asked to sign a terms-and-conditions agreement, including right-of-entry permission so that our installers can visit your property.

When installation appointments are available in your neighborhood, the customer service team will contact you to schedule an appointment.

What if I'm a renter? What if I'm a landlord?

Signing-up for the drop installation (network connection infrastructure to the home) is limited to the property owner. Typically, a landlord would be the property owner and so would be the one signing-up for the installation of the drop.

Signing-up for service should be completed by the person who is going to be billed for the monthly service (this is usually the renter, unless the landlord is going to include the price of Internet and/or phone service in the rent, or the unit is currently empty).

If renting, on the application you should indicate that you are a renter and include your landlord’s contact information in the appropriate fields. Your landlord will be contacted for the necessary installation permissions. The homeowner (landlord) MUST be present on drop installation day since both the outside and inside installation involves work on the property, wiring additions, and drilling through walls or floors. Installation can only be approved by the property owner.

If the property owner can’t be present on installation day, he or she can authorize someone who can be on-site on installation day to make decisions relevant to the installation and charges for any upgrades. We encourage all renters and homeowners (landlords) to discuss installation details and service preferences with each other before signing up.

What happens after the Subsidy Period?

As described more fully in the Installation section, the town is currently offering a subsidy (up to $750) toward the cost of connecting your home to the core network (i.e. from the street to your home; also called a "drop"). At some point (to be determined) this subsidy may no longer be available to offset this cost. A customer signing up for service after the subsidy has been discontinued would be responsible for the full cost of their drop (hundreds or even thousands of dollars). This is why we strongly encourage you to sign up for Becket Broadband as soon as possible, subscribing to at least the minimum service, even if you don't plan to use it right away.
