Burning Season:

The Fire Department reminds all citizens that open burning season starts January 15 and ends on May 1. A permit must be obtained from the chief either online at Burn Permits or by calling 413-623-2185. Weather conditions can change rapidly, especially in the spring, and the Chief will determine on a daily basis when it is safe to conduct open burning.

The open burning must be a minimum of 75 feet from all buildings and must be conducted between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm. It must also take place on the land closest to the source of material to be burned, according to DEP regulations (310 CMR DEP 7.07). While the fire is burning, an adult must attend it until completely extinguished.

Citizens are also reminded that it is illegal to burn household garbage or materials in an outdoor container. People who conduct illegal burning or who allow a fire to get out of control may be held liable for costs of extinguishing the fire, fined, and even imprisoned (MGL C48 S13).

Emergency Responders Need Visible House Numbers:

Becket’s emergency services would like to make residents aware that their houses should be clearly marked with their assigned house numbers per Article 17, Section 17 of the Town of Becket Bylaws.  In the event of an emergency, the town’s emergency services would be able to arrive at your location much more quickly if your house numbers were clearly visible.

E-911 Reflective Street Number Signs may be ordered through the Becket Volunteer Firefighters’ Association
