Town & District Tax Payment Information

Please mail payment to:

Town of Becket
Collector of Taxes
557 Main Street
Becket, MA 0l223

Please make all checks payable to the Town of Becket for the Town, Road District and Lake District taxes. For proper crediting, write the parcel number on the check and enclose the “collector copy” of your tax bill(s). The parcel map and lot number is the identifying number of each individual property. The format is a thirteen-digit number as follows: 000.0-0000-00000. Payment must be in the Office of the Tax Collector on or before the due date (not postmarked) to avoid additional interest charges. To obtain a receipt, enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope and both portions of the bill with your payment.

Mortgage Escrow Accounts

It is the taxpayer’s responsibility to see that the tax bill is forwarded to your lending institution for release of funds in escrow. This office does not send duplicate bills to the mortgage holders. Furthermore, the collection software has the capability of retaining only one mailing address; therefore if you live in a community with a corresponding road district tax, the assessed owner must decide on one mailing address for both bills.

Property Sold

Massachusetts’s General Law states that the fiscal year (begins on July 1st , six months before the calendar year begins) tax bill must appear in the name of the owner of record as of January 1st, six months before the fiscal year begins. If the property was sold after January 1st, the old owner’s name will still appear on the tax bill, however we will forward the tax bill in care/of the new owner once we receive a recorded deed. There is generally some delay with forwarding copies of recorded deeds to the Assessor’s Office, therefore if you’ve received a tax bill incorrectly please notify this office immediately.

Lake, Road & Maintenance District Taxes

The Town of Becket is under contract with Sherwood Forest, Becket Woods and Sherwood Greens Road Districts as well as Sherwood Forest and Center Pond Lake Districts to assess and collect the taxes relative to their respective budgets. The collected funds are released to the district treasurers weekly to expend as necessary for maintenance as authorized by special legislation. Questions regarding the assessment or collection methods may be directed to the appropriate town department. If you have questions regarding the maintenance within a district, please return to the Town’s Home Page for District’s links.

Personal Property Tax

Personal property tax is assessed on the tangible belongings in a home that is not the resident’s primary domicile or the furnishings and fixtures relative to a business. There are several methods of assessing a value to personal property, therefore please contact the Assessor’s Office for further information.
