Historical Commission Minutes 6/4/08

Present:  Rob Gorden, Harry Roff, Barbara Stuhlman,  Rita Furlong, Aaron Beatty
Guests:
Secretary’s Report: OK
Treasurer’s Report: OK  Reserve Fund contains….$1218.00 –amount used to pay for signs.  Regular account-$00.00
Business:
1.      Both of the National Historic Area signs are in place thanks to the town highway department, Signsmith, and  Rob.  Also the town district maps are in place at the two National Historic sites thanks to Aaron, Jennifer, Rob, and printers. A note of thanks will be sent to  the Windsor Marketing Group who printed the signs.
2.      Received a communication from the Planning Board regarding the antique shop on Main Street. Rob polled members of this committee, who then  approved  the project. Rob wrote to them to give our encouragement and approval.
3.      Rec’d MHC notice regarding the historic site near McNerney Road   
Culvert. They claim that the rebuilding project will not affect the Shaker Brook site.
4.      Heritage Walks Weekend planners wonder if we plan to have a walk on the weekends in September or October. Aaron suggested we just make them aware of our Walking Tour publication instead. All agreed.
5.      MHC notified us of the upcoming Mass History Conference.

6. Rec’d renewed notice of Cell Tower off Main Street. A new balloon   
    test will occur and then we will respond.
7.      Chester Signsmith can reproduce house signs made on wood ( cream with black) for a cost of $60.00 Aaron made a motion to use this new company to produce old home identification signs, Barbara 2nd. Motion passed unanimously.
8.      Assessors provided list of homes over 100 years. Rob suggested we contact them to see if there is any interest in a plaque. Rob wrote a letter to use in contacting owners. Mailings will be sent out.
9.      Cemetery work will continue next Tuesday. We are nearly finished with North Becket and so we will have completed all of the inventories of the Becket cemeteries.
10.     Rec’d letter from Mark Burgwardt of the Becket Federated Church, who wondered if we knew whether there were any sources of funding for a new roof. Rob will pursue ideas and let him know.
11.     BECKET railroad sign placement discussion held. Possibly use railroad ties to mount and place in North Becket somewhere. Will be discussed again next meeting.
12.      Aaron did research on Digitizing records. It can be accomplished by a special copier (PDF) if documents are 11” x17”. We’ll think about what records should be made available in this format.
